Sunghwa Edging

Specialized Edging and Edgebanding equipment

Korean based Sunghwa Woodline produce some of the finest edge banding and edge foiling machinery available. Their main market being Japan which demands the highest quality of equipment.

Sunghwa have for the last few years supplied the South African market with the SEF 101 machine (also known as the Devin machine). Early in 2007, after a visit to South Africa, Sunghwa introduced their revolutionary edge banding equipment into the market. These machines used an entirely new form of top, bottom, and end trimming units. These significantly increase the production of the machines while at the same time eliminating manual trimming after the machine.

Also introduced was the Supa Square machine which has rapidly gained popularity since its release.

SEB 101 Devin Door Machine

The SEF 101 machine, also known as the Devin machine, produces the so-called Devin edge.

The SEF 101 profiles the edge of the board, then lightly sands the edge and finally applies a heat transfer foil (see Synchron) to the edge.

The result is that the doors have a seamless transition between the surface laminate and the edging (ie No Glue Line). The corners also have a mitred look. There is no overlapping of edging on the corners.

Please note that the SEF 101 is designed for MDF based board only.

There are over 40 of these machines currently in production in South Africa. Heat transfer foils are supplied in South Africa through both Woodfinish Management and Synchron.

SEB 1340 Automatic Edging Machine

The SEB 1340 was introduced into South Africa early in 2007. It is an extremely efficient edge bander for PVC, ABS and Polypropylene edgings up to 1mm.

0.3mm, 0.5mm and 1mm edging typically make up 65 - 80% of the edge banding in production. With this in mind the SEB 1340 was introduced to perform this large volume of work quickly and effectively.

The SEB 1340 is comprised of 4 units:

(1) The Application Unit

(2) The Top and Bottom Trimming Unit

(3) End Trimming Units

(4) Buffing Head

The Advantages

The Top and Bottom Trimming units are hook knives, as opposed to typical edge banders which have spinning blades. This eliminates the chatter from the top and bottom of the edging. More importantly, it totally eliminates the need for manual trimming after the machine. The savings in time and extra man power become immediately obvious.
The End Trimming Units are based on a guillotine principle. Typical edge banders use a spinning blade which runs at a 45 Deg angel from top to bottom ,trims the edging and then returns to its original position. The SEB 1340 uses two guillotines which jump in from the side and trim the edging. This once again eliminates any chatter. Due to the units coming in from the side, the machine requires a very small gap between the boards - 100mm (typically this gap is between 500mm and 750mm). This small gap allows for the machine running at 13meters/minute to produce far more then machines with a faster federate.

The machine has a simple control panel with on/off and start/stop as the only controls.

Also worth mentioning is the fact that the SEB 1340 has no spinning blades and therefore requires no dust extraction.

SEB 2720 Automatic Edging & Corner Rounding Machine

The SEB 2720 is a high production edger for PVC up to 1mm, and Polypropylene up to 2mm. The machine can be specified to edge up to 3mm PVC. It is controlled via a Touch Screen and different programs can be quickly loaded or changed.

The SEB 2720 has front milling heads to eliminate any surface chips left by the saw and has full corner rounding ability for 0.1mm to 2mm radii.

The SEB2720 is comprised of 8 units:

(1) Milling Heads

(2) Application Unit

(3) Top and Bottom Trimming by Knife

(4) Top and Bottom Trimming by Motor

(5) Scraping Unit

(6) End Trimming Units

(7) Corner Rounding Units

(8) Buffing Head

The Advantages

When edging up to 1mm PVC the machine uses Top and Bottom Trimming hook knives, as opposed to typical edge banders which have spinning blades. This eliminates the chatter from the top and bottom of the edging. More importantly, it totally eliminates the need for manual trimming after the machine. The savings in time and extra man power become immediately obvious.

When edging over 1mm the machine uses Top and Bottom motor trimming (spinning blades). The chatter introduced by this process in eliminated by a scraping unit situated immediately behind the Motor trimming unit. This ensures that the top and bottom of the edge is perfectly trimmed. This once again totally eliminates the need for manual trimming after the machine.

The End Trimming Units are based on a guillotine principle. Typical edge banders use a spinning blade which runs at a 45 Deg angel from top to bottom ,trims the edging and then returns to its original position. The SEB 2720 uses two guillotines which jump in from the side and trim the edging (a double action guillotine is required for PVC between 1mm - 3mm). This once again eliminates any chatter. Due to the units coming in from the side, the machine requires a very small gap between the boards - 100mm (typically this gap is between 500mm and 750mm). This small gap allows for the machine to produce far more then machines with a faster federate.

The corner rounding units are situated at the back of the machine. These allow the machine to produce rounded corners with a radius of between 0.1mm and 2mm. The air powered motors are extremely fast acting and return to position immediately after the board has passed.

All components on the SEB 2720 can be individually turned on or off allowing you to select the best possible combination for your edging job. Predefined programs (e.g. 1mm PVC, 2mm Polypropylene) can be selected and all the correct units will become active.

SEF 1400 Supa Square Machine
Examples of finished product

The SEF 1400, also known as the Supa Square machine, produces seamless edge banding on chipboard. This means that the glue lines and overlapping of the edging on the corners, which can not be done away with by any machine currently available, can be entirely eliminated.

This is a two stage process. The chipboard panels are edged at the Edge Bander with a 0.5mm ABS edging. The SEF 1400 then chamfers the top and bottom of the edge with motor trimming units. Thereafter a Heat Transfer Foil is stamped onto and over the edge.

The result is a edged panel that has no glue lines and no overlapping on the corners. This result is very aesthetically pleasing as shown in the above pictures.

Both the ABS and Heat Transfer Foils are available locally through Woodfinish Management and Synchron.
